I'm really doing this so I don't have to write. Also, it occurs to me that I had better haul my ass onto Gate pretty soon. (I hope Monday isn't too late. Sunday is booked.) Any Gate people on the F-list up for entertaining me? Pretty please?

29 years ago (9970):
Shitan was born on the Third Class level of Solaris, ninth son of Shouki (father) and Ruki (mother) Ricdeau.

23 years ago (9976):
When he was six, he studied swordplay under his grandfather Kikka, and inherited the dual-swing "white" and "black" art. (1)

17 years ago (9982):
A plague caused by experiments at the Soylent Facility spread across the Third Class block; the entire family died in the epidemic. Hyuga, whose genius had already been demonstrated during his youth, suspected these experiments were the cause of the problem.

14 years ago (9985):
Through Ramsus's intervention, Hyuga entered Jugend and shared a room with Sigurd there. Together they became Elements.

9 years ago (9990):
Hyuga becomes a Guardian Angel.

7 years ago (9992):
He takes up command of the Third Invasion of Shevat. Fights Gaspar and encounters his granddaughter Yui, whom he falls madly in love with.

5 years ago (9994):
During his repeated visits with Yui (2), he also accepts Gaspar's teachings, and seals his sword technique. His first daughter, Midori, is born in Shevat.

3 years ago (9996):
Hyuga is entrusted with Cain's mission and sent to the surface, where he takes the name "Shitan Uzuki." He reunites with his family in Shevat and migrates to Lahan.

Present Day (9999):
He lives as "the doctor on the mountain." (3)

1: 白壇 and 黒壇 are literally - according to the dictionary - white and black "stages." I've seen "mandala" as another meaning associated with the 壇 kanji, which kinda says something about what it means, but. Will have to think about it. Suggestions welcome.
2: the original, "ユイの下" is a use I've never seen before. It's surely very simple. I just don't know how to interpret it. :P 下as a lower class or grade exists, but that doesn't strike me as quite right. Sorry, this wasn't included in our generic lessons!
3: This is so anti-climactic, I know. I don't remember exactly what the official translation used in place of this phrase. He's got a shiny forehead, though. :D

Next up! Oh, and by the way - I'm pretty sure Yui can still kick his ass any day, even if she isn't the one who whopped him during the invasion. Call it feminine intuition.

Same rules apply for this section as yesterday's. Did I mention I haven't practiced in a year or so? Well, I haven't. :D Except for this last semester, when I learned that words like "姦しい" can be pregnant with cultural meaning... or not!

Sealing of his sword skills
When seven, Hyuga was instructed by his grandfather in the "white" and "black" dual-sword technique. (1) He didn't just study; he showed extrordinary ability in combat, especially in this style, while in contrast Solaris lacked such ability. (2)

Having met Yui around the same time as his confrontation with Gaspar during the invasion, Hyuga returned to Shevat several times in secret after going back home, to see her. While visiting her, he also debated matters with Gaspar. (3) Hyuga was deeply impacted by Gaspar's philosophy as a warrior, and determined to seal the skills his grandfather taught him, which were meant to kill. (4) "White" and "Black" (5) were given into Yui's keeping and Gaspar became his mentor, training him in unarmed, hand-to-hand combat.

After that Hyuga received his orders from Cain, and his family departed for the surface. Even while watching over Fei and drilling him in combat, the seal on his sword tech was not released. When the group was about to go to Solaris, however, Yui released him in anticipation of Id's awakening. (6)

1: in the dictionary "真剣" refers to practice with real swords (versus wooden, or fake ones). However, the sentence isn't talking about practice; it's part of the skill, I assume. On the other hand, what the book says at the end of the second paragraph might belie that. Regarding the white and black, same comments as above apply here.
2: this has a lot of potential for being wrong. I don't know what it is about this sentence. For reference, I'm considering "Hyuga wa" and "Solaris wa" to be contrastive. The "wa" just before the last section of the sentence might throw that, I don't know. (This book is playing on all of my weaknesses. That's just awesome. But then, that's what I get for taking a year off, isn't it?)
3: if I were to be literal, this would be hilariously dramatic, talking about their secret dates and heated discussions with Gaspar (well okay, maybe not that last part so much), but... I think this gets the meaning across, honestly. The verb 交わす is arguable though, in that it has two kind of opposite meanings.
4: I guess Gaspar isn't all for mowing the enemy down. Why not?! (My phrasing is awkward; the part referring to Gaspar's uh, disposition - yay dictionary! - is giving me a hard time. "Philosophy" seemed an approrpiate, if completely not literal, substitute for what it's saying.)
5: two swords? I was actually never clear on this.
6: this was one really, really long sentence. :p

I hope your eyes don't bleed, [info]totorojo. XD

I should start on this stuff earlier. Maybe during the day, for once!

Sorry - I misposted this as anonymous twice! >_<

I'm doing a bad thing - making comments based on a quick skim read. I'm actually being very sneaky at the moment. This is being typed in a meeting about telescopes, sitting right next to my supervisor! >_<

One thing caught my eye: I'm not sure about the part about Hyuga suspsecting the experiments asthe cause of the plague. I'm pretty sure 疑惑を受ける is referring to Hyuga himself coming under suspicion because of his reputation as a genius. I have to say I'm not 100% confident about this one, if only because it seems a little odd. But nevertheless, what I'm pretty sure it isn't saying is that he himself suspected something. An important hint is the verb 受ける, which would normally refer to someone passively receiving something. A quick google of the phrase appears to support this...

More later :)

Re: Sorry - I misposted this as anonymous twice! >_<

Oho, slacking off on company time! XD

... passive. Ahahahahah. Good thing I'm practicing! I... forgot all about paying attention to that.

I interpreted it (as you see) as Hyuga becoming suspicious, with a slightly odd verb. What you mentioned occurred to me, but I dismissed it because that doesn't make much sense to me in context with the rest. At the very least, it brings up questions of who suspected him, and... hm.

I guess his fellow workers wouldn't be above that. We see in the game that they'll resent (and possibly try to suppress?) people who stick out, because it's a danger to their prospects of promotion. It could be pretty brutal down there if people compete for special treatment. Hyuga might be a convenient scapegoat, but he also loses his entire family, so... I don't know. I question whether Solarians would be paying attention to some kid's academic potential.

Somehow I don't think the PW is going to cover my line of speculation, though. Ah well. XD

Anyway, this isn't to say you're wrong (in fact, you're very right about that verb, which I see now that you've brought it up). I'll have to look, and there's always the possibility another section will clear this up. There's a paragraph for his family, and another for his entry to Jugend on the first page of his profile. If they don't say anything, I'm punting the PW across the room.

Part two. :D

Hard-wired into my brain is this: I need to see -られる to think "passive." However, after looking at the sentence structure, it still strongly implies that you're right, and I'm not sure if 受ける is an exception or not. It does imply something you're given, or that you accept, rather than taking.

I'm honestly not sure. Maybe it's an issue of common usage.
